Sisters (Barbara Tropp’s Crystallized Ginger Butter Squares)

It’s a really good thing that my boyfriend is going to be gone at a YoungLife conference for the next two weeks, because after Taryn brought me a bag of her cookies my tummy got a little more squishy… I don’t mind squishy tummies too much.  I mostly love spending time with my sister. We have always said that we are very different. Physically, I am taller and curvier; she is shorter, thinner, and sexier in general. She is studying medicine at a highly liberal ivy league university in arguably the most metropolitan city in America. I faint at the sight of needles and I am studying Classical Liberal Arts Journalism at one of the smallest, most conservative colleges in the country in a slow paced, relaxed, white collar town. I’m a hopeless romantic, and Taryn won’t watch a movie unless there is at least one blowup, a car crash, and a decent amount of yelling. So we have always thought of ourselves as being fairly different.

On a run today however, we realized that our saying we are very different is kind of like Olive and Forest green going on about their many differences in tone. I guess if you put Taryn and I side by side we have differences, but honestly, I don’t know anyone who is as similar to me as Taryn. (Which is nice cause she is really hot…)

We both finish papers two weeks before they are due, have running schedules that we stick to like law, like to make fun of each other’s love lives, climb to the top of rocks and jump off them.  We both have a tendency to do everything. In college Taryn took 18 credit semesters, taught Bible studies on campus, translated her Sunday services into Spanish for the Hispanic members, worked as an student medic, coached debate online, and corrected my papers for me. I’m taking 18 credits, working for admissions, debating on the varsity MootCourt and Parli teams, organizing a 5k race for the International Justice Mission, and editing random students’ papers.

Sort of funny when you think about it; I always hated it when people compared me to Taryn. I always felt like she did everything better than I did. Which she did… but honestly, I can see why we were compared, and Taryn will be next to me when I get a C in a class, get married, have a miscarriage, successfully plant a church, watch that church fall apart, and laugh with me when I remember that C passes, guys are very different from girls, children are a gift from the Lord, and that we plant the seeds, but God produces the fruit. I guess what I am saying is. I love my sister. Thanks for reading her blog.

Recipe made as written.

Crystallized Ginger Squares
Adapted from Barbara Tropp
Makes 3 dozen. Allow 3 hours, 35 minutes active time.

8 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled
1/3 cup sugar
1 large egg yolk
1 cup flour
1/3 cup crystallized ginger, chopped
1 teaspoon orange zest, finely grated

Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth, the blend in the egg yolk. Add the flour, ginger and orange zest and mix until well combined. Shape the dough into a 4″x4″ block that is one inch thick, wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge until firm, about two hours.

Preheat oven to 350F. Line baking sheets with silpats or parchment paper. Cut the brick of dough into 4 one inch logs, then cut into slices 1/4″ thick. Place the cookies 1/2 inch apart on the baking sheets and bake until cookies are firm and light golden brown at the edge. Remove to wire racks to cool.
